January 13, 2012 - Advisory report published for second opinion of rooster combs extract

The Novel Foods Unit has sent an assessment report about an extract from rooster combs to the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport on 6 January 2012. This report is an account of a so-called second opinion in accordance with the European admission procedure for novel foods, as set out in Regulation 258/97.

The advisory report discusses the safety of this product, which is obtained via an extraction process from the combs of slaughtered roosters. This extract consists mostly of hyaluronic acid, a component of the connective tissue matrix. The applicant wants to use the product as an ingredient in various types of foods, for example dairy products. The United Kingdom performed the first evaluation of this dossier. The Netherlands objects to the positive judgement by the British, because the VNV committee discovered significant shortcomings in the safety dossier.
