February 24, 2012 - Advisory report published for second opinion of an ‘oil with DHA and EPA’

The Novel Foods Unit has sent an assessment report about an algae oil with > 22.5 % DHA and > 10 % EPA (also called fish oil fatty acids) to the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport on 24 February 2012.

This report is an account of a so-called second opinion in accordance with the European admission procedure for novel foods, as set out in Regulation 258/97. The advisory report discusses the safety of the new oil, which is obtained from cultures of the micro-algae Schizochytrium sp. The applicant wants to use the product as an ingredient in various types of food products. The United Kingdom performed the first evaluation of this dossier and the Netherlands agrees with this evaluation.
