April 7, 2011 - Assessment report published for Arachidonic acid-rich oil as a novel food ingredient

The Novel Foods Unit sent an assessment report for Arachidonic acid-rich oil to the Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport on 7 April 2011.

This report is a summary of a so-called initial assessment according to this procedure, relating to consumer safety of the new product Arachidonic acid-rich oil.

This oil is produced by the mould Mortierella alpina and can safely be used as a source of arachidonic acid in infant nutrition.

The Novel Foods Unit (BNV) of the Medicines Evaluation Board Agency advises the Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport on the safety of novel foods. This advisory task is part of the European authorisation procedures for novel foods outlined in Regulation 258/97.
