April 7, 2011 - Assessment report published for Arachidonic acid-rich oil as a novel food ingredient
The Novel Foods Unit sent an assessment report for Arachidonic
acid-rich oil to the Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport on 7
April 2011.
This report is a summary of a so-called initial assessment
according to this procedure, relating to consumer safety of the new
product Arachidonic acid-rich oil.
This oil is produced by the mould Mortierella alpina and can
safely be used as a source of arachidonic acid in infant
nutrition.
The Novel Foods Unit (BNV) of the Medicines Evaluation Board
Agency advises the Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport on the
safety of novel foods. This advisory task is part of the European
authorisation procedures for novel foods outlined in Regulation
258/97.
