April 17, 2011 - Assessment report for wheat bran extract as a novel food ingredient
The Novel Foods Unit sent an assessment report for an extract of
wheat bran to the Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport on 15
April 2011.
This report is a summary of the so-called second assessment in
accordance with the European authorisation procedure for novel
foods outlined in Regulation
258/97.
The report discusses the safety of an extract obtained from
wheat bran via a combination of extractions and enzymatic
treatments. This extract is composed primarily of carbohydrates,
mainly arabinoxylan oligosaccharides.
The applicant discusses use of this extract as a water-soluble
dietary fibre in a number of varied types of foods. Belgium
performed the initial evaluation of this dossier, and the
Netherlands concurs with the Belgian positive judgement on the
safety of the product.
